Start with your actual immigration status and reason for needing the account. If you live or work in Thailand, approach a branch with verifiable identity, stay and purpose documents; if you are a tourist or hold a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), do not build your plans around getting an account. Before visiting, ask the receiving branch whether its specific product accepts your case and what evidence it needs—an account, mobile banking and PromptPay are separate things to confirm.
Which route fits you?
| Your situation | First action | What to establish before visiting |
|---|---|---|
| Joining a Thai employer | Ask HR which bank and branch handle payroll, then contact that branch yourself. | Your actual visa/stay and work documents, the employer's letter, and the payroll cutoff. A referral helps organise the application; it is not approval. |
| Foreign spouse of a Thai citizen | Ask a branch to assess a family-purpose application using your current status. | Which marriage/family records, spouse identification and address evidence it accepts. Do not assume a work permit is the only possible purpose document. |
| Retiree or another long-stay resident | Give the bank the exact visa or residence category, stay expiry and intended account use. | The accepted non-employment evidence, such as official retirement/residence records and evidence of your funds. A long visa's name alone does not settle eligibility. |
| DTV holder | Check product exclusions before preparing an application. | KBank's published savings-account conditions expressly exclude DTV. Another bank must confirm its own route; a long permitted stay is not a guarantee. |
| Tourist, visa-exempt visitor or visa-on-arrival traveller | Plan to use payment methods you already have; make any account enquiry directly with the bank. | KBank excludes these categories. Bangkok Bank directs foreigners to branches for assessment; that is not a published promise to open tourist accounts. |
| Existing customer whose passport, job, address or status has changed | Contact your bank to update its records before your next important payment. | Which documents and channels remain available during review. An old account does not prove eligibility for a new one. |
For a short visit, check your international card's overseas-use settings, fees and withdrawal limits, and keep a modest cash reserve. Ask accommodation providers how you can pay without a Thai transfer. See the Thailand money and budget guide. Do not pay an intermediary just to discover that the proposed account cannot be opened in your own name under the bank's rules.
What is law, what is bank policy, and what can a branch decide?
Thailand's know-your-customer (KYC) rules require a bank to establish and verify who its customer is. BOT Notification 18/2569, effective 1 April 2026, adds detailed customer-risk controls to the existing account-opening framework.
For foreign individuals, clause 4.3.2(1.2.2) combines identity, permission-to-stay conditions/duration and a verifiable purpose for being in Thailand, with at least two government-issued items in the evidence set. This is not simply a demand for two photo IDs. The ordinary passport routes specify non-immigrant permission and distinguish passports the bank can verify electronically by NFC from those it cannot. A passport whose chip cannot be read is not automatically disqualifying: the second route uses additional reliable documentary evidence.
There is also an important exception. Where those routes cannot be followed but an account is necessary for livelihood or receiving remuneration, subclause (c) requires the bank to establish identification and equally reliable risk controls. Ask a manager to assess the documented need under that provision. It does not promise a tourist account or let an agent waive KYC.
Keep three layers separate:
- Regulation: the identification, verification and risk controls the institution must follow.
- Product policy: which customers a particular bank/account serves and its published conditions.
- Application assessment: whether your documents, purpose and source of funds satisfy the bank in your case.
A branch enquiry can resolve a missing document or an unusual case. It cannot be treated as permission to ignore a product exclusion. Equally, one refusal should not be retold as a nationwide law banning every foreigner in that situation.
Two practical starting points
These are verified places to enquire, not a ranking or an approval forecast. Check the current linked conditions again before your visit.
| Bank and product | Published position | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| KBank savings account | Foreign-customer list: passport, non-immigrant visa, government-issued identification from the country of nationality, and purpose evidence such as a work permit or school certificate. Tourist, visa-on-arrival, visa-exempt and DTV cases are excluded. No minimum opening deposit is specified. Additional documents may be requested. | Give the branch your exact category and ask which purpose evidence applies if you are a spouse or retiree. Take the listed additional national identification; do not rely on passport-only advice. |
| Bangkok Bank savings account | Published opening deposit: THB 500. Its linked opening conditions tell foreign customers to contact a branch for requirements. | Obtain the checklist for your nationality, current status and purpose from the branch that will process the application. The public page does not establish a tourist exception or a universal foreigner document list. |
The opening deposit remains money in the account; it is different from a card or service fee. Ask for the current fee sheet, including any debit-card issuance/annual charge, account-maintenance conditions and transfer charges. If offered a paid package or insurance, ask whether it is optional and which account term would make it necessary. Do not purchase a product on an oral promise that it guarantees approval.
Use this enquiry script:
I am a citizen of [country], holding [exact visa/status], with permission to stay until [date]. I need a personal account for [salary/household spending/retirement expenses]. Will this product accept an application in my situation? Please confirm the documents, acceptable address proof, minimum deposit and fees, whether mobile banking and phone-linked PromptPay are available, and who can review an unusual case. I need a usable payment route by [date].
Record the branch, staff contact and checklist date. A telephone answer is preparation, not a completed KYC decision. Ask whether you need an appointment and whether document translations or certification are required before paying to obtain them.
Prepare one coherent document file
Bring originals for inspection and the copies or electronic records the branch requests. The table is a preparation checklist; it does not make every example a mandatory document at every bank.
| Evidence | Prepare and check |
|---|---|
| Identity | Current passport and any additional government identification the product requires. If your passport changed, ask whether the bank also needs the old passport or official linkage. Make spellings and document numbers consistent. |
| Immigration status | Visa/e-Visa evidence, latest admission stamp and extension/residence documentation relevant to your case. Show the current permission-to-stay date, not only the visa's validity date. |
| Purpose and funds | Employees: ask HR for the bank's requested employment/payroll letter and work-authorisation evidence. Family applicants: ask which official marriage/family records establish your purpose. Retirees: ask which retirement and income/funding records are accepted. Prepare a clear explanation of expected deposits and payments. |
| Thai address | Give the address where you actually stay. Ask whether the bank accepts your lease, an official residence certificate or another specified record. Do not assume a hotel booking, TM30 acknowledgement and residence certificate are interchangeable. |
| Phone and app | Bring your own usable phone and the Thai mobile number you intend to keep. Check the carrier's registered owner and passport number; ask the bank for acceptable SIM ownership evidence or an applicable exception. |
| Tax self-certification | Know your tax-residence jurisdictions and relevant tax identification numbers (TINs). If a number has not been issued, ask how to document the genuine reason. Do not guess a number or simply select Thailand because you have a Thai address. |
Where a document does not exist in your country or situation, identify that gap before the appointment. Ask the bank which alternative it can verify, rather than buying a document package from someone promising “guaranteed opening”. The bank owns the approval decision; HR supplies employment evidence, a spouse can supply family records, and a mobile carrier can correct SIM registration.
If you need an account to build funds for a future immigration application but the bank asks for a status you do not yet hold, explain that sequence to both the bank and the Immigration office handling your application. Ask the bank whether it has a documented route for your present circumstances, including the livelihood provision where relevant. Ask Immigration which financial evidence and timing your intended route requires. Do not claim a future status, borrow an account or assume the bank will finish before an immigration deadline. The retirement options guide covers the separate stay decision.
Tax forms are a separate decision from visa status
Under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), a bank collects tax-residence information. UOB Thailand's published guidance requires self-certification covering tax residences and TINs, with a reason and supporting explanation where a TIN is unavailable. It says an incomplete self-certification can prevent account opening; its procedure asks customers to notify changes promptly and provide an updated form within 30 days. That is UOB's stated process—ask your own bank for its form and update deadline. US-person information under FATCA is a separate part of the enquiry.
An account opening does not settle whether a particular remittance is taxable. Keep the bank's compliance file and your tax analysis distinct; use the existing foreign-income tax and remittances guide for that question.
Make the account usable: app, SIM and PromptPay
Do not leave with only an account number if your real need is to pay rent from your phone. Ask the bank to confirm the services actually activated, your limits, how to recover access after changing phones, and the alternatives if the app is unavailable. Test a small transaction yourself before relying on the account for a large deadline payment. Keep PINs and one-time codes private.
Online account opening and mobile banking are different. For example, the K-eSavings sales sheet limits that product to Thai nationals. An app's “open account” button is therefore not evidence that foreign-passport customers can use it. KBank's separate foreign-customer guide describes branch-based services, including K PLUS enquiries.
Check SIM identity before troubleshooting the app. KBank's ownership notice says foreign customers' SIM registration passport number must match the bank's record. If necessary, update the carrier's record or ask the bank to change the linked number. Its notice also provides exceptions for family-owned numbers, employer-owned numbers and persons under legal care, supported by appropriate evidence; these require bank review.
For a registered spouse's number, prepare the requested identification, proof of SIM ownership and government relationship evidence such as a marriage certificate, and ask the branch to process the family exception. It is an app-registration exception, not a waiver of account-opening checks. The notice's 30 April and 15 July 2025 dates concern its earlier remediation/suspension rollout, not a new 2026 deadline.
PromptPay needs its own confirmation. Bangkok Bank's registration instructions include a branch route for foreign customers using a passport, bankbook or current-account chequebook, and the mobile number to link. The phone number is the payment identifier; your passport is identification evidence, not a substitute Thai national-ID PromptPay number. Ask staff to confirm the linked account and recipient name. Account approval alone does not establish that registration has succeeded.
Bring the phone receiving the SMS code to the branch. Bangkok Bank's registration tips specify an OTP by SMS for verification. Its published rules limit this branch registration to individual Thai-baht savings/current accounts, not joint or foreign-currency-deposit accounts, and a mobile number can be linked to only one PromptPay account at a time across banks. If your number is linked elsewhere, ask that bank how to cancel the old registration before attempting a new link. Do not mistake your passport identification for a Thai citizen-ID alias.
Security controls that affect payments in 2026
The BOT mobile-banking security rules, Notification 4/2568, limit a customer's use to one user profile and one device per mobile-banking application, not one deposit account across Thailand. Their additional face-verification triggers include a transfer of THB 50,000 or more, each THB 200,000 of cumulative daily transfers, and increasing a daily transfer limit to THB 50,000 or more. These are authentication triggers, not a universal daily allowance.
The rules allow controlled exceptions, including customers unable to use face comparison and certain low-risk transfers. If a disability prevents verification, ask the bank for its alternative identity-check procedure before a payment is due. Ask what daily limit and supported-device requirements apply to you; do not assume the advertised maximum will be assigned to a new account.
The April 2026 customer-risk rules also cover ongoing monitoring. Keep records explaining funds and respond through the bank's verified channels if asked for updated evidence. A large or unusual payment may need review; do not split payments to evade checks or allow another person to route money through your account.
Effective rules and proposals are different. As checked on 23 October 2026, the BOT's broader digital-channel security consultation runs from 7 October to 6 November 2026. Its draft is not an enacted replacement to apply to your account today.
If the bank refuses—or an existing service stops
First ask what failed. Record the date, branch, product, documents supplied and the explanation the bank can give. Different problems need different responses:
| Problem | Practical response |
|---|---|
| Missing, expired or inconsistent evidence | Ask for the exact correction and acceptable substitute, then return with it. Have HR, the document issuer or carrier fix the underlying record. |
| Your status is excluded from that product | Do not keep presenting the same application as though a different clerk can change policy. Enquire about a genuinely eligible product or another institution, declaring the same facts. Keep a usable alternative payment method. |
| An unusual livelihood/remuneration need cannot fit the ordinary document route | Ask the manager/compliance team to assess the documented need under BOT 18/2569, clause 4.3.2(1.2.2)(c). Request the bank's alternative-document process; approval remains unresolved until the bank completes its review. |
| The account exists but the app is blocked | Ask whether the cause is SIM ownership, passport mismatch, device verification or another control. Establish whether branch/card access is still available; an app problem alone does not tell you the account's status. |
| The bank is reviewing or restricting transactions | Contact the bank directly for the case reference, requested evidence, affected services and next review step. Supply the true source/purpose records. Do not try to bypass a restriction through another person's account. |
For a poor or unexplained service response, first use the bank's formal complaint channel and retain its reference and promised response date. If it does not respond appropriately, the Bank of Thailand's complaint guidance directs customers to BOT assistance, including 1213. A complaint seeks proper handling; it is not a promise that BOT will require the bank to open an account or release restricted funds on a particular date.
There is no guaranteed opening or restriction-resolution time offered here. If salary, rent or an immigration application is approaching, tell the responsible employer, payee or office about the banking delay now and agree a legitimate alternative. Before leaving Thailand or changing your job/status, ask the bank which records to update, how to maintain contact and how to manage or close the account if needed. Do not infer automatic closure—or permanent access—from a visa change.
Two examples: turning the checklist into a decision
Illustration 1: new employee, payroll cutoff next week. Maya has a current non-immigrant permission, work permit and an employer using Bangkok Bank. Today she asks HR for the payroll branch contact, required letter and exact cutoff, then confirms that branch's passport, address, purpose and tax-form checklist. She brings her own registered SIM and asks about app activation. If a missing document delays approval, HR must agree how salary will be paid; Maya does not treat the THB 500 opening deposit or an HR referral as proof the account will be ready.
Illustration 2: non-working spouse, phone registered to the Thai spouse. Daniel has current family-based non-immigrant stay and wants a KBank savings account. He asks the branch which family-purpose evidence it accepts and prepares his passport, additional national identification and requested family/address records. He also asks about the published spouse-owned-SIM exception, bringing carrier ownership evidence and the marriage record. If he has no Thai TIN, he explains his actual tax residences and asks how the bank's self-certification records a genuinely unavailable number. He must resolve account approval, tax paperwork and app verification separately before the rent due date; his marriage certificate does not automatically resolve all three.
Before you make the trip, answer these five questions
- What exact immigration status and permission-to-stay end date will you show, and does the chosen product accept that application?
- Which branch will assess you, and what identity, purpose and address evidence has it specifically requested?
- Whose name and passport number are on your SIM, and what must happen before the app and any PromptPay registration will work?
- Which tax residences and TINs will you declare, or what documented reason explains a missing number?
- What is your real payment deadline, and who will arrange the alternative if opening, activation or review is delayed?
