A child admitted to an eligible full-time Thai school can seek school-supported Non-Immigrant ED (Non-ED) status; an accompanying qualifying parent needs a separate Non-Immigrant O (Non-O) application. Paying tuition grants neither visa nor permission to work.
Before paying a non-refundable deposit, ask the school’s admissions or visa officer for its legal school name, licence evidence and written support plan for the child and each accompanying adult. Then check that plan with the Thai mission handling the applications and, for renewals, the Thai Immigration office. If your family already has an appropriate worker-family or independent stay, establish whether a change is needed before replacing it.
This guide focuses on school-age children and their accompanying parents. “Residence” here means temporary permission to stay, not permanent residence or citizenship.
Decide which person needs which route
| Family situation | What to establish first |
|---|---|
| Child comes for full-time schooling; parent comes to care for the child | School-supported Non-ED for the child, plus the parent’s separate Non-O eligibility and finances. |
| One parent already works lawfully in Thailand | Compare the child’s existing or available worker-family permission with school-supported residence. Ask the school and Immigration whether the existing basis is acceptable; school enrolment alone does not prove that Non-ED is mandatory in every case. |
| Two parents want to accompany one child | Obtain a decision on each parent’s route before committing. Do not assume one school place sponsors two adults. |
| Grandparent, step-parent or other guardian accompanies the child | Send the actual relationship/custody order to the mission and Immigration. A school’s use of “guardian” does not establish that the person qualifies as an immigration parent. |
| Child takes only a short course or attends an unrecognised programme | Ask whether that course supports the intended student permission and any parent route. Do not treat course payment as a long-term family residence product. |
| Child is approaching 20 or entering university | Review age eligibility and the next category. University ED Plus is a separate route, not an automatic benefit for schoolchildren or their parents. |
Singapore’s guardian page, updated 18 May 2026, describes parents of students under 20 enrolled in a full-time, long-term course. That is the verified scope of that mission’s route; it is not a universal entitlement for every caregiver or educational activity.
Check the school before choosing the immigration plan
Ask admissions to answer these questions in writing:
- What is the licensed institution and campus enrolling the child?
- Is this a formal school, international school, university or non-formal course, and which authority supervises it?
- Can it issue the child’s named acceptance/enrolment letter and the necessary immigration support documents?
- Does it need a separate education-authority endorsement for this application?
- Who issues renewal and transfer documents, how much preparation time does the school require, and what are its refund terms if permission is refused?
A curriculum brand, overseas accreditation or attractive campus is not a substitute for the Thai institutional documents required by the receiving authority.
The Kota Bharu consulate’s checklist distinguishes the school’s acceptance letter and registration documents from an approval letter issued by the relevant education authority, such as the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC) or Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC). Its checklist exempts universities and international schools from that particular additional approval-letter item. The exception does not remove the other school evidence.
Do not infer a national minimum school age from an agent’s package. For nursery or kindergarten admission, ask the school and receiving authority about the exact licensed programme and child’s age. For nursery, short-course or other non-standard school programmes, neither a school invoice nor an agent’s package proves that Immigration will accept the programme for student and parent stay. Obtain written category-specific support from the licensed institution and the receiving Thai authority.
Tuition and immigration charges belong on separate lines. The school decides admission and its contract terms; the mission decides the visa application; Immigration decides admission and in-country permission. None can guarantee the others merely because a fee has been paid.
Prepare the child’s and parent’s files separately
| File | Responsible person | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Child identity and application | Parent or authorised representative | Child’s passport, photograph, application-location evidence and requested financial/support evidence. |
| School support | School’s authorised officer | Named acceptance/enrolment letter, course and duration details, authorised signature evidence, school registration/licence and any required education-authority endorsement. |
| Parent application | Each applying adult | Own passport, photograph, location/residence evidence, financial history and school letter supporting the intended accompanying role. |
| Family and custody | Parent/guardian; civil or court authority if necessary | Birth/adoption record, parental identification, relevant custody decision, travel consent and required translated/authenticated copies. |
The Los Angeles school-level checklist names an education-authority or international-school letter and a signed enrolment letter. For minors it also sets out parental identification, custody evidence where relevant and travel consent from a non-travelling parent. Its foreign-document certification requirements belong to that mission; get the receiving authority’s instructions before paying a translator.
If one parent cannot sign, do not replace consent with your own declaration unless the authority accepts that procedure. Supply the actual court/custody evidence and ask what is missing. A divorce decree may need to be read for who has parental authority, rather than accepted merely because it proves divorce.
Keep entry finances separate from renewal finances
The financial question is not simply “Do we have THB 500,000?” Record whose money, which bank, how long it has been held, and which application it supports.
Example: applying for the parent’s visa through Singapore
Singapore’s published guardian checklist requires SGD 20,000 or THB 500,000 per parent, maintained over the preceding three months, with bank statements identifying the holder and transactions. It also requires qualifying Singapore location/residence evidence, a school letter, school licence/business records and relationship evidence. The applicant must remain in Singapore while the e-Visa is processed.
The mission asks for submission at least 21 working days before intended travel and lists a SGD 100 single-entry fee, non-refundable. These are Singapore instructions, not a worldwide processing guarantee or an in-country renewal checklist. Read its full current checklist for nationality-specific additions and certification details.
In-country parent extension: a different financial test
The original current-generation Immigration text is available, not just the older 2023 summary. Immigration Order 12/2568, dated 23 January 2025, section 2.11 (official PDF page 13, zero-based page 12), describes the parent-of-student extension in an institution covered by 2.8 or 2.9. The rule specifies at least THB 500,000 in a qualifying bank or specialised financial institution in Thailand, held in the applying father’s or mother’s name for the preceding three months. For the first application, it states at least 30 days before filing instead. The required evidence includes a bank deposit certificate and bankbook/account copy in addition to the parent's and student's passports and proof of relationship.
Important distinction: the 30-day exception applies to the first application, not every first-year renewal or a guarantee of acceptance just because the money has been transferred. The receiving Immigration office must confirm the current checklist, lawful application window, any later changes and the case's account evidence. A Singapore embassy's separate 2026 Non-O entry-visa bank test is not the in-country extension rule.
The rule does not automatically qualify both parents against one student, every non-parent guardian, or a parent who wants to work. Plan a separately supported status for any second adult until Immigration confirms the person’s own eligibility. The 2026 Immigration amendment 122/2569 concerns other clauses; it does not replace parent-extension clause 2.11.
For planning, ask the receiving Immigration office:
“My child will hold school-supported permission. This is my first application / renewal. Which current rule applies to my parent extension? What account ownership, bank letter, balance history and holding period must I prove, and can my application be filed before my current stay ends?”
A foreign bank statement acceptable for a visa application is not automatically the Thai-bank evidence described for an extension. School fees already paid are not a balance still held in the parent’s account.
Illustrative timing problem: A parent has just funded a Thai account, but their stay expires next week. They should not assume a new deposit plus a school letter gives extra time to complete a holding period. Immigration must establish whether a lawful application or other permission is available. If it is not, arrange departure and the appropriate overseas application; waiting in Thailand is not itself an extension.
Follow the application sequence
- Agree the school place and document plan. Obtain written payment/refund terms. Separate admission conditions from immigration conditions.
- Identify the responsible Thai mission. Give it each person’s nationality, current location, relationship and proposed category. Confirm it accepts the application from that location.
- Prepare linked but individual applications. Child: education purpose. Parent: the appropriate family/accompanying purpose. Ask the mission whether the parent may file alongside the child or needs the child’s approval first.
- Submit through the required channel. For e-Visa, follow the official manual. Check names, passport numbers, category and receiving mission before payment. Monitor additional-document requests; submission is not approval.
- Check the issued documents and entry stamps. Keep each person’s current permitted-until date. A school-year contract or three-month visa validity is not a year of approved stay.
- Arrange the first extension with the school and Immigration early. Obtain the current student and parent checklists together, but submit the separate applications and evidence required for each.
Phnom Penh’s ED guidance describes an initial stay of up to 90 days and discretionary extension. Do not assume every course is entitled to a year. Extension length and any domestic status-change filing window depend on the licensed programme and the application actually accepted by Immigration; do not book travel or withdraw from another permission on a presumed conversion.
If already in Thailand, take the existing visa, arrival stamp and extension history to Immigration before cancelling anything or withdrawing the child from the old school. Ask whether an extension, change of status or overseas application is required. Thai e-Visa is not a substitute for a domestic extension decision.
Renewal, travel and school changes
Use a family calendar with separate rows for the student and each adult:
| Event | Who acts | Evidence or decision to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Student renewal | School prepares its support; parent coordinates the child’s application | Current enrolment and whatever study/attendance/progress records Immigration requests; resulting stay stamp and any return date. |
| Parent renewal | Parent prepares finances and family evidence; school supplies requested support | Child’s current permission, relationship records, current bank evidence and the adult’s own approval. |
| Address/reporting obligations | Responsible adult and accommodation provider as applicable | Confirm the applicable TM.47 and TM.30 duties separately from extensions. |
| Overseas holiday | Each traveller/parent checks with Immigration | Whether re-entry permission is required to preserve the existing stay; do not assume the school holiday suspends immigration dates. |
| Transfer, withdrawal or school closure | Old school, new school, parent and Immigration | Dated release/withdrawal evidence, new acceptance/support and the approved change/cancellation sequence for child and parent. |
| Child approaches the age/category boundary | Family, school/university and Immigration | Next qualifying basis before relying on a further parent extension. |
For renewal preparation, use the actual permitted-until date and the office’s accepted submission window. No universal “apply 30 days before” rule is asserted here. Likewise, there is no verified automatic grace period after school withdrawal.
If the school delays paperwork, request the missing document by name and a delivery date; take that correspondence and the passports to Immigration before time runs out. An agent’s promise or a paid term does not preserve permission.
Schoolchildren are not ED Plus university students. Phnom Penh’s official page restricts that programme to bachelor-level study or above. Do not copy its re-entry exemption or post-graduation arrangements onto a schoolchild or accompanying parent.
Can the accompanying parent work?
Non-O accompanying-parent permission is not a work authorisation. Do not fund the move on the assumption you can immediately teach, work at the school, freelance locally or start a trial shift.
For a real job offer, ask the employer to take your current status and proposed duties to DOE and Immigration. Establish the permitted immigration/work route, any required change of status, and the lawful start date before working. The MFA’s employment guidance requires the relevant work permission; it does not settle work-permit eligibility while retaining every guardian category.
If employment is essential to the household budget, obtain a specific DOE/Immigration answer for the proposed job and applicant before paying school fees. A separate lawful work route may be necessary; a guardian visa by itself is not a work permit.
Two family plans that need different answers
A single parent and a ten-year-old moving for a full-time school place: The first action is to obtain the school’s licence/support pack and assemble the birth, custody and any consent records. The parent then confirms the child’s ED and their own Non-O application with the responsible mission, while planning the separate renewal finances. If the deposit or custody evidence cannot be accepted in time, postpone the move or obtain the authority’s lawful alternative; do not treat tuition as immigration approval.
Two parents, one six-year-old, and a school offering “two guardian visas”: Ask the school to identify the exact route for each adult and obtain confirmation from the mission and Immigration for the intended extensions. A consular checklist saying “per parent” does not by itself prove that both parents can obtain the same extension against one child. If the second parent cannot use that route, assess their own qualifying employment or other status before committing the whole family.
Family limits: Do not assume an approved student automatically supports two parents or a grandparent. The relevant adult should receive their own acceptance from the mission and the intended Immigration office before committing.
Before you commit, answer these five questions
- What licensed school and course support the child’s application, and who will issue the documents?
- What separate immigration route will each adult use?
- Which financial evidence is needed for the visa abroad, and which is needed later in Thailand?
- What are the actual child and parent stay deadlines, and who manages renewals and school transfers?
- If a parent needs to work, the second parent is refused, or school support ends, what lawful alternative is ready?
Practical boundary: This is the ordinary licensed-school student plus accompanying-parent pathway; it is not a guarantee for informal courses, non-parent guardians, both adults together or permission to work. The issuing mission and Immigration decide their separate applications.
